The Canadian Rockies, and the communities that surround them, are part of the essential fabric of our national landscape. Our iconic mountains, the people who were first drawn to their peace and beauty, the daring explorers who blazed trails and mapped the territory, the entrepreneurs who saw opportunities to make their livelihood here – all have vibrant stories to tell. The Whyte Museum has made the commitment, as part of its strategic plan, to share these exciting stories in a long-term exhibition, Gateway to the Rockies.

As a keeper of history, the Whyte Museum is dedicated to discovering, embracing, preserving, and connecting with the enduring stories of the Canadian Rockies that surround us. Our visitors tell us they want more extensive and interactive ways to find out about our rich history, and this exhibition will tell these stories as never before.

From the earliest evidence of human habitation over 10,000 years ago in the Bow Valley, to the entrepreneurial spirit of the Brewster family. From the intrepid adventures of the two Marys – Schäffer and Vaux, to the world peace mission of Walking Buffalo. From the artistic and philanthropic vision of Peter and Catharine Whyte, to the father of modern guiding and heli-skiing, Hans Gmoser. From the perspective of "Cave Avenue" artists like Charlie Beil, Carl Rungius, and Nicholas de Grandmaison to Nick Morant's photography studio. Sixteen different interactive installations will focus on these real people, and many more, who made their lives in the Canadian Rockies, and who shaped our mountain culture.

This ten-year exhibition is the most comprehensive ever undertaken by the Whyte Museum – and you can help make it come alive! Beyond the initial design and installation of the exhibit, ongoing upgrades and enhanced exhibit features are part our long-term plan. Your support for this exciting project through the Gateway to the Rockies Fund will make an important difference in keeping this major exhibit up-to-date and fresh.

Donations of any amount are welcome, and every dollar will bring us closer to sharing these significant stories of Canadian Rockies heritage. Each and every donation will be acknowledged, and will receive an official tax receipt.

To realize this ambitious project, our goal is to raise $500,000. We have great support from selected corporate, foundation, and government sources, but your help, and your personal commitment, will inspire us to bring this exhibition to its fullest achievement.
